What ELSE Can I do?
Activities
You can help lead the way.
You might have some good thoughts about friendship, support, and what makes a good school community. And bringing together the whole school to work on a project makes for a better school. Speak to your head with some ideas if you want to make a difference.
Learn about peer support programs. Even pupils in primary schools can take part in programs that are helpful to the whole school, while senior school students have lots of opportunities to change the climate in their schools.
- Peer mentoring–you might be specially trained to be someone who can help those who are having trouble, or befriending the friendless. Even primary schools can start a “big brother/big sister” program where older students are matched with those in the first years, to smooth their way and help them make friends. It means a lot when you are facing new challenges.
- Peer mediation–Special training in conflict resolution means you could be a very important part of keeping the peace. On the playground or in the classroom, when conflict occurs, the participants will be referred to a mediator, who makes sure each is heard, and a fair solution arrived at.
- Peer tutoring–many bullied children have academic difficulties (and many bullied children are high-flyers) who may need a boost. Helping them learn will also help them be happier at school.
- Peer education–You can learn how to teach, and help your fellow pupils learn about drugs or bullying and run your own training sessions.
Help your school develop ways to communicate that will enable those in trouble to get help without endangering themselves. Secrets, when they’re about bad things, are toxic. Making a suggestion box for the front hall, where good notes and bad can be dropped lets those in trouble get some help, unremarked.
